Children's Ministry

Our mission is to make God KNOWN to His kids through His Word, to cultivate a culture of community in our classrooms, to equip families to train their children in their homes, and to empower kids to go out after they leave their classes to passionately share the truth of Jesus with a hurting and broken world that is in need of Him.

At Mountain Springs, we are a family! Our kids are an extremely important part of that family, and it is our privilege to be able to teach and disciple them in their faith so that they have the solid foundation of God's Word and the support of their church community to accomplish anything God calls them to.

With an incredible team of people who serve wholeheartedly on a weekly basis through teaching, crafts, music, and games, we endeavour to show each child who comes through our church doors the love of Jesus in a fun, age-appropriate, and compassionate way.

Joel Turner

Senior Pastor

Joel Turner

Prior to the Lord’s calling him into the ministry, Joel was a comedian in western Canada. After coming to Christ, he entered into full-time ministry in North Carolina and later moved home to serve as youth and young adult pastor at a Calvary Chapel in Calgary. In 2007, the Lord moved on his heart to plant a church, Mountain Springs CC, in NW Calgary where he continues to pastor. In 2020 Joel released his first book entitled, “Humor Me”; as a result he now shares his insights on the topics of humour, evangelism, and public speaking. Joel is married to Tania who runs the women’s ministry with her team and they have 4 children who they homeschool: Chloe, Tatum, Roman and Cruz.
Steve Rathje

Steve Rathje

Associate Pastor

Steve Rathje

Steve and his amazing wife Marilyn have been a part of the Mountain Springs family since 2012. He first joined our staff team as a Pastoral Assistant in 2016 and has served as an Associate Pastor since early 2020. Before God called Steve into the ministry, he worked for many years as a Human Resources professional at various organizations in both Calgary and BC. He describes himself as an ordinary guy doing his best to stay close to Jesus so that he looks, loves, and lives more like Jesus…but he’ll be the first to admit that he still has a long way to go. Steve loves spontaneous adventures, exploring new places, the ocean, ethnic food, chocolate chip cookie dough, going for prayer walks, and perhaps most of all, making people feel welcome and loved when they come to church. He and Marilyn have three grown children - Sara, Jana & Jonah - and two cats that he’s more than willing to give you a deal on if you’re interested.

Robyn Mast

Children's Ministry Director

Robyn Mast

Robyn has been serving as the Children’s Ministry Director for a year and a half, and serving at Mountain Springs Calvary Chapel since it was planted nearly 15 years ago. She is passionate about kids coming to know Jesus, learning more about Him, diving into God’s Word, and learning what it means to be a church family - and for them to have ridiculous amounts of fun while doing it! She serves alongside her husband of 12 years, Reece Mast, who is one of the church elders. They love to do ministry together and with their three kids, Jude, Justus and Ivy. Outside of church ministry, she homeschools all three kids, runs a mini-zoo on their acreage, loves music and reading, and runs her photography business on the side.

Doctrinal

We believe in what is termed “The Apostles’ Creed” as embodying all the fundamental doctrines of orthodox evangelical Christianity.

We believe there is one living and true God, eternally existing in three persons; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, equal in power and glory; that this triune God created all, upholds all, and governs all.

We believe in God, the Father, an infinite, personal Spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power, and love; that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men; that He hears and answers prayer; and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ.

We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son, conceived by the Holy Spirit. We believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, and teachings; His substitutionary atoning death on the cross; bodily resurrection; ascension into heaven to the right hand of the Father; perpetual intercession for His people; and personal, visible, pre-millennial return to earth. We believe that He is one and the same as God. He is fully human and fully God.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, who came forth from the Father and Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment and to regenerate, sanctify and empower in ministry all who believe in Christ. We believe the Holy Spirit indwells every believer in Jesus Christ and that He is an abiding Helper, Teacher, and Guide. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit and in the exercise of all biblical gifts of the Spirit as reflected through the fruit of that same Spirit.

We believe that all the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the Word of God, fully inspired and without error in the original manuscripts, and that they are the infallible Word of God and rule of faith and practice.

We believe all people are by nature separated from God and responsible for their own sin, but that salvation, redemption and forgiveness are freely offered to all by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. When a person repents of sin and accepts Jesus Christ as his/her personal Lord and Saviour, trusting Him to save, that person is immediately born again and sealed by the Holy Spirit, all of his/her sins are forgiven and that person becomes a child of God, destined to spend eternity with the Lord.

We await the pre-tribulation rapture of the church, and we believe in the literal Second Coming of Christ with His saints to rule the earth, which will be personal and visible. This motivates us to holy living, heartfelt worship, committed service, diligent study of God’s Word, regular fellowship, participation in adult baptism by immersion and Holy Communion.

We are neither Five-Point Calvinists, nor are we Arminians. We adhere firmly to the biblical teaching of God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibility. We avoid any theological systems of belief that go beyond the written Word and thereby divide the body of Christ.

We do not believe in “positive confession” (the faith movement belief that God can be commanded to heal or work miracles according to man’s will); human prophecy that supersedes the Scriptures; the incorporation of humanistic and secular psychology into biblical teaching; the overemphasis of spiritual gifts and experiential signs and wonders to the exclusion of biblical teaching; or that true Christians can be demon-possessed.

We believe in the universal Church, in the living spiritual body, of which Christ is the head and all regenerated persons are members.

We believe the Lord Jesus Christ committed two ordinances to the Church: 1) baptism, and 2) the Lord’s Supper. We believe in baptism by immersion and communion, both of which are open to all believers in Jesus Christ.

We believe in the laying on of hands for the sending out of pastors and missionaries, and in conjunction with the anointing of oil by the elders for the healing of the sick.

Practical

We believe the only true basis of Christian fellowship is Christ’s Agape love, which is greater than differences we possess, and without which we have no right to claim ourselves Christians.

We believe worship of God should be spiritual; therefore, we remain flexible and yielded to the leading of the Holy Spirit to direct our worship.

We believe worship of God should be inspirational; therefore, we give great place to music in our worship.

We believe worship of God should be intelligent; therefore, our services are designed with great emphasis upon the teaching of the Word of God that He might instruct us on how He should be worshipped. We seek to teach the Word of God in such a way that its message can be applied to the individual’s life, leading that person to a greater maturity in Christ. We teach both expositionally and topically.

We believe worship of God should be fruitful; therefore, we look for His love in our lives as the supreme manifestation that we have been truly worshipping Him.

We believe that the church government should be simplistic rather than a complex bureaucracy and we depend on the Holy Spirit to lead, rather than on fleshly promotion.

We believe that the Bible clearly delineates that spiritual gifts are for the edification of the body and that they are to be exercised in love. We believe that love is more important than the most spectacular gifts, and without love, all exercise of spiritual gifts is worthless. In our services, we focus on a personal relationship with God through worship, prayer, and the teaching of the Word of God. We do not practice speaking in tongues during worship or while a Bible study is in progress because we do not believe that the Holy Spirit would interrupt Himself. God is not the author of confusion. These gifts are encouraged in more intimate settings, e.g. believers’ services and small groups where their benefit can accomplish the purpose for which they have been given – the edification of the body of Christ.

Statement of Faith

Calvary Chapel has been formed as a fellowship of believers in the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Our supreme desire is to know Christ and be conformed to His image by the power of the Holy Spirit. We are not a denominational church, nor are we opposed to denominations as such, only to their overemphasis of the doctrinal differences that have led to the division of the body of Christ.

Purposeful

We are a church that strives to develop and grow in 5 main areas, all found in the Great Commission and the Great Commandment and explained with the acronym R.E.A.C.H.

What's a Refresh Group?

A computer in a video call with a fresh cup of coffee.

Refresh Small Groups have one, simple purpose: to bring people together.

We believe God created us to live in relationship with others and only then can we live the full life He intends for us. Sharing life through community is part of our design, but meaningful relationships aren’t always easy to find. That’s why Refresh Groups exist—to make these life-changing relationships relevant and accessible to you. We believe that we are to develop our Christian Walk in groups together in the week then meet together on Sundays corporately for Teaching, Worship, Baptism and Communion.

Groups meet together in homes on various days during the week for Bible study, fellowship and to do life together. Contact us for information on when and where groups meet.
